Daimler-Benz AG
The brand name Mercedes goes back to the year 1900. From the union of the companies Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft and Benz & Cie., the Daimler Benz AG was made perfect in 1926. From this the brand name Mercedes-Benz resulted. Passenger cars of the Daimler-Benz AG were quite frequently at that time. 122,727 Mercedes cars were registered in the German Reich on 1st December 1938. Until 1940, more than 4,000 Kübelwagen of different types were manufactured. When the failure of the light Einheits-Pkw became clear, the incurred gap was closed with the Mercedes Benz type 170 VK. 19,075 vehicles of that type were manufactured from 1938 to 1942. As successor of the heavy Einheits-Pkw - which had likewise proven as a little useful - approximately 4,900 1.5t lorries of the type L 1500 A were built as personnel carriers. Lorries from 1.5 ton to 10 tons payload were produced besides the passenger car program. The Reichswehr procured some 3 ton lorries as personnel carriers. Of the all-terrain 1.5 ton type G 3 a three-axles lorry more than 2,700 units were manufactured from 1929 to 1935. Further 7,400 units of the type LG 3000 3 ton lorry were assembled from 1935 to 1938. Aproximately 33,000 units of the important L 3000 & L 3000 S/A 3 ton lorries were manufactured from 1938 to 1944. Of the likewise important 4.5 ton lorry approx. 9,500 exemplars were manufactured by the Daimler Benz AG. Towards the end of war the own 3 ton lorry had to be adjusted and the Opel Blitz 3 ton lorry had to be built instead. After only approx. 3,500 units a bomb attack terminated production. In addition, the Wehrmacht had thousands of drawn in formerly civilian lorries from Mercedes Benz. The Daimler Benz AG was one of the three larges omnibus manufacturers in the German Reich. So, many of them were later seen in use by the Wehrmacht. Mainly medium and heavy omnibuses were made. The first COE omnibus was made in the late 1930s.
