In cooperation with Wa Prw 6 III, Krauss-Maffei developed the leichter geländegängige Zugkraftwagen – light cross-country towing vehicle - (Vskfz. 616) of the type KM l 4 in 1934. Only one prototype was made. Eight serial vehicles were made by Büssing-NAG under the type designation BN l 4. Straight away, the development order for the half-track vehicles of the five ton class passed over to Büssing-NAG. The type BN l 5 introduced in 1935 had the same 90 HP Maybach NL 35 TU engine like its predecessors but had a reworked running gear with an additional pair of road wheels. During serial production, the stronger 100 HP Maybach NL 38 TU engine was introduced. The complete design of the vehicle was reworked and corresponded to the standardised design of the German half track vehicles to a large extent. 184 exemplars of the leichter geländegängige Zugkraftwagen (Sd. Kfz. 6 & 6/1) of the type BN l 5 were made. Additional 313 vehicles were made by Daimler-Benz under the type designation DB l 5. Apart the gear, the brakes and the Maybach NL 38 TUK engine, the type BN l 7 resp. DB l 7 introduced in 1936 was nearly identical to its predecessor model. 281 exemplars of the BN l 7 and 228 exemplars of the DB l 7 were made. In mid 1936, the leichter geländegängige Zugkraftwagen (Sd. Kfz. 6) was renamed to leichter Zugkraftwagen (Sd. Kfz. 6). The final designation mittlerer Zugkraftwagen 5t (Sd. Kfz. 6) was assigned early in 1937. Serial production of the type BN l 8 – which corresponded widely to the conclusion model BN 9 – started in November 1937. It had a totally reworked running gear with two additional pairs of road wheels which lead to an increased length of the vehicle and a redesign of the superstructure. The Maybach NL 38 TUK engine was the same as with the type BN l 7. During serial production, it was replaced by the Maybach NL 38 TUKRM engine. The final model BN 9 was introduced in 1939. It had the stronger 115 HP Maybach HL 54 TUKRM engine which caused a further extension of the vehicle and some detail changes. 617 serial and two experimental vehicles (BN 9 V) were made from May 1939 to February 1941. Beginning in February 1941, the improved model BN 9b was manufactured. Besides minor other changes, the type BN 9b had a changed braking system, a central lubrication system, a raised exhaust pipe and a changed trailer coupling system. 1,167 serial vehicles were made by Büssing-NAG until November 1943. Further 300 vehicles were made by BMM from April 1942 to August 1943. The m. Zgkw. 5t was replaced by the schwere Wehrmachts Schlepper (s.W.S.) beginning in December 1943. The predominant part of the m. Zgkw. 5t was delivered with the engineer superstructure (Sd. Kfz. 6). It was used by engineer units as towing vehicle for storm boat trailers, the engineer vehicles PF. 10, 11 and 12 and other engineering equipment. A part of the m. Zgkw. 5t was equipped with an artillery superstructure (Sd. Kfz. 6/1). Mainly, these vehicles were used as towing vehicle for the 10.5 cm le. FH 18 as well as for the 10 cm s. K. 18 and the 15 cm s. FH 18. The Sd. Kfz. 6/2 self propelled anti aircraft gun was armed with a 3.7 cm Flak 36. Single exemplars were used as self-propelled anti tank guns armed with a Soviet 7.62 cm Pak 36 (r), as fire control vehicle for the V-2 units and as armoured SPG’s armed with the 7.5 cm Pak L/40,8.
