4,101 exemplars of the Mercedes-Benz type L 1500 S were manufactured from 1941 to 1944. With 3,601 produced exemplars, the leichtes Löschgruppenfahrzeug – light group fire-fighting- vehicle – (LLG), beginning in 1943 Löschfahrzeug – fire engine – (LF 8), was the most common variant. The remaining vehicles were mainly used as platform lorries by civil organisations and the private industry.

Interestingly, this leichte Löschgruppenfahrzeug (LLG) had a number plate of the Reichspost. Normally, such vehicles were used by the Feuerschutzpolizei – fire brigade subordinated under the police – and the Luftschutz – civil air defence – and had Pol or WL number plates. The LLG resp. LF 8 had a crew of eight men. Equipment was stored inside and outside of the vehicle. A Tragkraftspritze – portable fire pump – (TS 8) was stored on a separate trailer.
