The schwerer geländegängiger Personenkraftwagen, or sometimes designated as s. gl. Einheits-Pkw - litterally translated: heavy cross-country standard-passenger car – was manufactured by Horch and Ford from 1937 to 1942. There were variants which had four-wheel steering and variants with front axle steering. The steering of the rear axle could be shut off in the case of the vehicles with four-wheel steering. Some improvements were introduced with the type 40. The supporting-wheels at the car body sides had been dropped. Only one spare wheel was left which was stored inside of the car body as with the m. gl. Pkw. The four-wheel steering was dropped, too. The fuel filler was relocated to the outside of the car body. The main part of the s. gl. Pkw.’s was used as personnel carriers and as towing vehicles for light guns. Likewise still frequent were the ambulances with closed superstructures. A small number of commander’s cabriolets were made on the chassis of the s. gl. Einheits-Pkw, too. Besides these variants, there were others in small numbers like the amplifier motor-vehicle - which had the same closed superstructure like the ambulances – or the searchlight motor-vehicles. The Luftwaffe used a small number of self propelled 2 cm anti aircraft guns on the chassis of the s. gl. Einheits-Pkw. These vehicles had a small platform and dropsides similar to the Sd. Kfz. 10/4. The four-wheel armoured cars were based on the chassis of the s. gl. Pkw., too. Especially in its main purposes as towing vehicle for guns and as personnel carrier, the s. gl. Pkw. proved to be too damageable and not steady enough. In these purposes it was set out to abnormal high strains. In many cases it had to carry ten crewmen with their equipment and a trailed gun. Furthermore, the technology was too complicated and as a result too vulnerable. Its dead weight of more than 3.2 tons was out of proportion compared to its payload of around 1 ton. The later introduced personnel carriers based on 1 ton lorries of the makes Mercedes Benz, Phänomen and Steyr had more favourable performance data and furthermore were more steady and simpler constructed. Even the three-axled lorry Krupp-Protze – which was used for similar tasks – had better performance data like a dead weight of around 2.5 tons and a payload of 1.1 ton. The use of the s. gl. Pkw. for the other tasks worked a little bit better because the danger of being overloaded was noticeably smaller. The s. gl. Pkw. was indeed an acceptable vehicle – appropriate handling and maintenance assumed. But this was rarely possible under war conditions…
