|
Origin of the Steyr Daimler Puch AG was a factory for rifles, created in Steyr by Leopold Werndl in 1830. Arms production yielded starting from 1894 to the building of bicycles and after 1918 to the manufacturing of automobiles. Starting from 1923, the name was changed to Steyr Werke AG. The Steyr Daimler Puch AG arose from the fusion of the Austro-Daimler AG with the Puch-Werke AG in 1928 and the 1934 fusion with the Steyr Werke AG. The Austrian company Steyr was represented in the German Reich with 24,807 registered passenger cars on 1st December 1938. Altogether 1,200 Kübelwagen of the type Steyr 250 were taken over from the Austrian army. Moreover, Steyr produced six-wheels all terrain lorrys for the Austrian armed forces and later also for the Wehrmacht. These were quite complex designed. Until 1941, approximately 4,500 vehicles were manufactured. During the war, the Steyr type 1500 A was manufactured as personnel carrier and as lorry. Steyr made 12,450 vehicles. Further 5,600 vehicles were made by the Auto-Union work Wanderer. Beginning in August 1944, the slightly improved Steyr type 2000 A was made. About 6,400 vehicles were made until February 1945.
