The Mannschaftskraftwagen - personnel carrier - (Kfz. 70), abbreviated Mannsch. Kw. (Kfz. 70), was the most frequent variant based on the Einheitsfahrgestell II für s. Pkw. - standard chassis II for heavy passenger car - resp. Einheitsfahrgestell II für s. Pkw. Typ 40 - standard chassis II for heavy passenger car type 40. Outwardly, it can’t be differentiated from the Protzkw. (Kfz. 69). The Kfz. 70 had a crew of eight including the driver. Less the estimated 100 kg per man with personal equipment, only 250 kg remained for weapons, ammunition and equipment which did not belong to the operational vehicle.

Some improvements were transposed with the Type 40 of the s. gl. Pkw. The four-wheel steering and the supporting-wheels were dropped. Only one spare-wheel was left which was now stored inside of the car body. The actual shortcoming – to high dead weight compared to the small payload – could not be eliminated.
