The businessman William C. Durant became general manager of the Buick Motor Company in 1904. After David Buick had left his company, Durant became president of Buick. Already in 1908, Durant founded the General Motors Corporation. Durant acquired the automobile manufacturers Cadillac and Oldsmobile. In 1909, the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company was acquired which offered commercial vehicles under the brand name GMC Truck starting in 1912. The Oakland Motor Company joined the General Motors Corporation in 1909, too. In 1918, Durant bought the Chevrolet Motor Company. The British company Vauxhall was acquired in 1925. A second line of automobiles was started by the Oakland Motor Company in 1926, distributed under the brand name Pontiac. Between 1929 and 1931, the General Motors Corporation acquired the majority of stock of the German family enterprise Opel. In 1932, the Oakland line was given up due to the popularity of Pontiac.
