In 1862, the company Opel was founded by Adam Opel. At first sewing machines were produced, later also bicycles. In 1898 Opel started with the automotive manufacture. In 1924, the Opel works in Rüsselsheim were equipped with assembly-lines as the first company in Germany. On 17th March 1929, a majority of shares was sold to the General Motors Corporation. In 1931, the Opel family finally handed over control of their enterprise due to the world economic crisis. The Opel brothers could intersperse with the fact that the name and the model politics of Opel remained. On 1st December 1938, altogether 480,464 Opel passenger cars were registered in the German Reich. The only passenger car which was ordered by the Wehrmacht was the m. gl. Einheits-Pkw. In 1931, production of the new American-style Blitz lorries started. The most important Opel lorry made for the Wehrmacht certainly was the Opel Blitz 3 ton lorry which production started in 1936. Of the S-model more than 100,000 units were manufactured. The A-model was produced in nearly 25,000 units beginning in 1940. The 3 ton Blitz was made until August 1944 when a heavy bombing raid stopped production in the work Brandenburg. The Wehrmacht had Opel Blitz lorries of all payload classes and years of construction. Common to all Opel lorries was the relatively high payload contrary to the dead weight. Besides that, the Opel engines were appreciated because of their reliability and the good organisation of the spare part supply. In the 1930s, Opel omnibuses were widespread. Besides the drawn in formerly civilian Opel Blitz omnibuses, the Wehrmacht had special military Opel Blitz omnibuses. These had a widely simplified standard superstructure. The car body maker Ludewig in Essen delivered nearly 2,900 exemplars of these military buses to the Wehrmacht from 1939 to 1944.
