Gottlieb Daimler developed his first automobile - with decisive assistance of Wilhelm Maybach - until the year 1886. This was the first four wheeled vehicle in history which was propelled by a combousting engine. Until the year 1900, it was operated under the name Gottlieb-Daimler-Fabrik. In 1900, the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft was founded. Beginning in 1896, commercial vehicles were manufactured besides passenger cars. The passenger cars were offered under the brand name Mercedes beginning in 1902, whereas the commercial vehicles were offered under the brand name Daimler. Due to financial difficulties, the Daimler-Benz AG was founded on 1st July 1926 by the merger of the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft and Benz & Cie. Daimler manufactured passenger cars and lorries for the Imperial Army and later also for the Reichswehr besides the civilian production. In addition, some armoured vehicles were manufactured for the Reichswehr and police units.
