The Steyr type 640 had a payload of 1.5 ton and was powered by a 55 HP engine. The Steyr type 640 was to be found quite frequently in use by 2. and 9. Panzer Division until the year 1942.

This Steyr 640 was still used in the camp Wöllersdorf in 1944. From 1937 to 1941 altogether 3,780 exemplars of this type were manufactured.

Many Steyr type 640 lorries were equipped with closed superstructures used as Kfz. 31 ambulances. It could reach a top speed of 70 km/h.
