The Steyr 40N (type 540) introduced in 1936 was replaced by the stronger propelled Steyr type 740 after only 60 exemplars were made. 350 exemplars of the Steyr type 740 were made from 1937 to 1939. Most probably, this Steyr type 740 was talen over by a unit of the Wehrmacht only just so it had not yet received a license number.
