The Skoda works in Pilsen arose from a small engine factory of Ernst Graf Waldstein in 1859. From the beginning, Skoda made one’s mark in the armaments industry. The automotive manufacture began in 1923. This was continuously expanded after the purchase of the automobile company Laurin & Klement in the year 1925. Beside passenger cars, lorries were manufactured, too. From the beginning, Skoda supplied vehicles to the Czechoslovakian armed forces. Partially, these were taken over by the Wehrmacht, later. During the occupation time, Kübelwagen and lorries were manufactured under German direction, among other things. Until 1940, Skoda used comprehensive type designations for the military lorries. For example, the meaning of the type designation 6STP6-L was: 6 = six-cylinder engine, S = medium, T = towing vehicle, P = all-wheel drive, 6 = six-wheel, -L = light design. The meaning of further letters was: D = diesel engine, V = heavy, -T = heavy design. In 1940, the type designations were widely simplified. The number for the cylinders and the T for towing vehicle were ommitted (for example: L, 6L, 6SD).
