The company De Soto was founded by Walter P. Chrysler on 4th August 1928. It was named after the Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto. Chrysler founded this company as rivalry to its archrivals General Motors, Studebaker and Willys-Knight. After Chrysler bought the Dodge Brothers Inc. a rivalry between these two companies arose. The manufacturing was ceased due to war restrictions from 1942 to 1946.
