The Kharkov tractor plant (KhTZ) started with the production of the SKhTZ-15/30 agricultural tractor in 1931 – one year after the Stalingrad tractor plant (STZ). The SKhTZ-15/30 was a manufacture under license of the American International 15/30. Production of the agricultural crawler tractor SKhTZ-NATI-1TA was started in 1937. Vehicles delivered to the Red Army had the designation STZ-3. Likewise in 1937, production of the agricultural crawler tractor KhTZ-T2G propelled by a wood-gas generator – a variant of the SKhTZ-NATI-1TA – was started. Production at KhTZ ended in autumn 1941 due to the occupation of the plant by the German Wehrmacht. In 1944, production could be re-started.
