The foundation of the company DKW goes back to the year 1902. However, the name DKW became established after World War I. Starting with the production of toy engines and motorcycles one changed to the automotive manufacture in the middle of the 1920s. After the assumption of Audi in 1932, the union into the Auto-Union finally took place. Beginning in 1922, DKW manufactured motorcycles from 125 to 500 ccm. The Wehrmacht mainly used small and medium solo motorcycles for dispatch riders. The passenger cars of the brand DKW placed the largest post of the vehicle stock of the Auto-Union. 233,704 passenger cars were registered on 1st December 1938.
