The enterprise Audi was established on 16th July 1909 as August Horch Automobil Werke GmbH in Zwickau by August Horch, after he had withdrawn from his former company August Horch & Cie. When the use of his surname for a further automobile enterprise prohibited, it was finally decided to rename the company and call it Audi Automobil Werke GmbH on 25th April 1910. In July 1910, the first vehicle with the name Audi left the work in Zwickau. In 1915, the Audi Werke AG was founded. After Audi was advised into financial difficulties in 1928, an assumption took place by DKW. In 1932 the union into the Auto-Union took place. However, only few cars carried the brand name Audi during this period of time. On 1st December 1938, only 1,306 Audi passenger cars were registered in the German Reich.
