Already in the K.St.N. from 1937, Feldwagen (landesüblich) - field wagons (customary) - were destined as replacement for the leichter Heeresfeldwagen (Hf. 1) especially in rearward units. Because these field wagons proved to be insufficient, they were further developed to the Ersatzfeldwagen 40.

After the beginning of war, a large number of different customary field wagons were taken over by the Wehrmacht especially in Eastern Europe. These so called Panjewagen had an ideal ratio between dead weight and payload and could be towed by the widespread Panje horses. Later, The Panjewagen Pleskau 1 and Pleskau 2 were further developed from these customary field wagons.

Rural wagons with pneumatic tyres were very rare in the 1930s. Also such wagons were classified by the Wehrmacht as Feldwagen (landesünlich).
