The tractor work of Chelyabinsk was founded in 1932. Production of the Stalinetz S-60 tracked tractors started the same year. It was nearly a 1:1 copy of the American Caterpillar SIXTY of the year of construction 1924. The S-60 was replaced by the more modern S-65 in 1937. Also in the Soviet Union, possibilities to spare raw materials were searched. For this reason a variant of the S-65 propelled by a wood gas generator was made – the SG-65. The Stalinetz S-2 was the military variant of the S-65. But this construction suffered under technical problems, permanently. During war, mainly tanks were manufactured. Therefore the city Chelyabinsk got the nickname Tankograd.
