The Van Doornes Aanhangwagenfabrieken (DAF) was founded by Hub van Doorne as Hub van Doorne, Machinefabriek en Reparatie-inrichting in Eindhoven in 1928. The change of name occurred in 1932. From this time on, DAF manufactured trailers for lorries. Beginning in 1935, military vehicles were manufactured, too. Primarily, vehicles of foreign manufacturers were converted. For example, DAF converted 1t lorries of Chevrolet and Ford to personnell carriers. Besides this, DAF developed the TRADO-drive. Commercial two axle vehicles with a 4x2 drive could be converted to cross-country manoeuvrable three axle vehicles with a 6x4 drive. Vehicles with four wheels could be converted to all wheel driven vehicles, too. DAF was involved in the development program of the Maultier series.
