The brand Ardie was founded by Arno Dietrich in Nuremberg in 1919. After the founder died by an accident in September 1922, the brand was taken over by the Jewish lawyer Leo Bendit who converted the company to a limited company. Commencing in 1925, British J.A.P. engines were also used. In the course of the Aryanisation of the German economy initiated by the National Socialists, Bendid was forced to sell the company in the year 1933. The company was taken over by the family Barthel, the owners of the Dürkopp works. Because of the limitation of foreign currency at that time, no more J.A.P. engines could be procured. So German engines of the brands Bark and Küchen were used. Starting in 1936, own engines were developed. In the course of the Schell Plan, the type variety had to be reduced. During the war, only the model Ardie VF 125 and a stationary engine were produced.
