The company Dürkopp was founded in 1867 for manufacturing of industrial sewing machines. Later, bicycles were made. Beginning in 1897, automobiles were made modelled on the automobiles from Panhard & Levassor. Production of commercial vehicles started in 1899. The first lorry with cardan drive was presented in 1906. During World War I, lorries with a payload of 3 to 5 tons were manufactured. Production of these was continued after the war. The first newly constructed vehicles were presented in 1923/24. On some chassis semi-trailer units and omnibuses were offered, too. Production of passenger cars was stopped in 1927 and of lorries in 1929 due to the upcoming world economic crisis.
