Besides the Protzkraftwagen (Kfz. 69), the Mannschaftskraftwagen - personnel carrier - (Kfz. 70), abbreviated Mannsch. Kw. (Kfz. 70), was one of the most important vehicles in the stocks of the Wehrmacht. At the beginning of war, a large part of the motorised infantry units was equipped with this vehicle.

Beginning in 1937, the Mannsch. Kw. (Kfz. 70) mit Einheitsfahrgestell II für s. Pkw. - with standard chassis II for heavy passenger car - and later mit Einheitsfahrgestell II für s. Pkw. Typ 40 - standard chassis II for heavy passenger car type 40 - was made. The chassis proved to be too complicated and vulnerable during war.

Therefore, the Einheitsfahrgestell II für s. Pkw. was replaced by the l. gl. Lkw. (o) - light cross- country lorry (commercial) - Mercedes-Benz L 1500 A, Phänomen Granit 1500 A and Steyr 1500 A which were also used as chassis for the Mannsch. Kw. (Kfz. 70). They worked much better because of their simple construction, relatively large payload and sturdiness.
