The company Società Piemontese Automobili (SPA) was founded in Turin in 1906. In 1909, SPA merged with the Fabbrica Ligure Automobile Genova and was renamed to Società Ligure-Piemontese Automobili. At the beginning, SPA made sporty passenger cars. Financial difficulties led to the takeover by Fiat in 1926. After that, SPA evolved to a manufacturer of special military vehicles. Military lorries and wheeled tractors with two and three axles were made. After the capitulation of Italy, production was kept up under German direction. More than 900 vehicles of different types were made in 1944.
