Triumph Motor Company

The German Siegfried Bettmann founded the Triumph Cycle Company in Coventry for trading bicycles in 1886. Three years later, the first own bicycles were manufactured. In the year 1896, the Deutsche Triumph Fahrradwerke AG was founded in Nuremberg, the hometown of Bettmann. Beginning in 1902, the Triumph Cycle Company started the manufacturing of motorcycles. During World War I, Triumph delivered more than 30,000 motorcycles to the British army. In 1923, Triumph presented the first own developed passenger car. The company name Triumph Motor Company was established in 1930. Despite several successful models, the company was in decline in the 1930s. Therefore, the motorcycle branch had to be sold in 1936. Bankrupt had to be announced in 1939. The new owners used the work for the production of aircraft parts. During a bombing raid on Coventry in the night from 14th to 15th November 1940, the work was nearly completely destroyed.
