The origin of Leyland Motors goes back to the year 1896. Name giver was the city Leyland in Lancashire. At first, lorries with steam drive were made, later vehicles with petrol engines. In the 1920s, first attempts were made with diesel engines. Beginning in the 1930s, these were produced in series. At this time the company ascended to one of the most important British lorry manufacturers. Besides other manufacturers Leyland manufactured lorries with three-axles for the British army. Some of them were captured by the Wehrmacht.
