William Lyons and William Walmsley founded the Swallow Sidecars Company for the production of motorcycle sidecars in Blackpool in the year 1922. Commencing in 1927 also sporty and elegant car bodies for the Austin Seven were offered. In 1928 the company shifted to Foleshill on the northern edge of Coventry. Car bodies for Standard passenger cars were offered starting in 1929. An especially low chassis for Swallow was manufactured by Standard in 1931. Because of disputes about the brand name between Swallow and Standard, the brand name S.S. was created as a compromise. In the year 1934, Walmsley was sold out to buy the Swallow business. As a result of that, Lyons founded the S.S. Cars Limited. One year later, the name Jaguar appeared first in a type designation. In 1940, the production of passenger cars was stopped due to war restrictions until 1945.
