In 1933, Edwin Richard Foden, who was convinced of the diesel engine for commercial vehicle construction, founded the E. R. Foden Ltd. – ERF in short – after he failed to establish his concept against the other members of the management of the Foden Ltd. The first cab over engine lorries for a payload of 6 to 7 tons and Gardner diesel engines were offered the same year. Later, lorries with three and four axles followed. During World War II, only few vehicles were made.
