In total, 431 exemplars of the MAN type L 1 were made from 1938 to 1942. It was similar to the MAN type Z 2 but it had larger wheels and different rims. It was propelled by a 90 HP diesel engine and it had a payload of 4 tons. The engine bonnet was about 10 cm longer and slightly broader than in the case of the MAN type Z 2.

This MAN type L 1 stood between many lorries inducted to military service in late summer 1939. The vehicles had received a dark grey camouflage coat and a white WH on the mudguards for identification. On the left side stood a similar large Mercedes-Benz type L 3750, on the right an Opel Blitz 3,6-36.
