About ten exemplars of the s. gl. gp. Pkw. (6 Rad) (Sd. Kfz. 247) mit Fahrgestell des l. gl. Lkw. (o) – a heavy armoured passenger car based on the chassis of the light commercial cross-country lorry – were made from 1937 to 1938. It was based on the chassis of the Krupp L 2 H 143. The vehicles were used as armoured commanders’ vehicles of some motorised reconnaissance battalions.

A rear view of an Sd. Kfz. 247 (6 Rad). Often the vehicle is designated as Standartenwagen – in English: standard car. This is misleading. During reviews, the commander drove in his car with the standard in front of his unit. Normally this was a Kübelwagen. In the case of the Sd. Kfz. 247, the vehicle of the commander was exceptionally armoured.

This absolutely rare photo of the interior of an Sd. Kfz. 247 (6 Rad) clarifies some details which were unknown until now. Drawings of the interior show two seats in the rear of the vehicle but nothing in the centre. This would not be suitable for a commanders’ vehicle. Actually there was a broad comfortable bench in the centre. The pedestal was used for a scissor telescope. The two additional mountings were used for the standard pole.
