The Henschel type 33 W 3 replaced the predecessor model Henschel type 36 J 3 beginning in 1936. It was propelled by a 170 HP, six-cylinder diesel engine. According to the superstructure, it had a payload of 9 to 10 tons. This Henschel type 36 W 3 was photographed during the campaign in Poland in 1939.

As an option, the heavy three-axle lorry could be delivered with a twelve-cylinder, 250 HP petrol engine with a capacity of nearly 22 litres as Henschel type 36 H 3. Most probably, only buses were delivered with this engine. Less known is the fact, that several of these heavy lorries were made by order of the Deutsche Post Osten – German Mail East - in a cab forward version as Henschel type 36 SV 2.
