Presumably, development of a new three-ton lorry was started by Hansa-Lloyd already in 1937. This model entered serial production in 1938 still as Hansa-Lloyd Dreitonner just before the offer was changed to the brand name Borgward.
The additional louvres in front of the front mudguards and the straight bumper were typical for the Hansa-Lloyd Dreitonner. These features can be found on early Borgward type 3t G.W., too.
