The Truppenluftschutzkraftwagen - A.A. motor vehicle - (Kfz. 4) had four doors and the spare wheel mounted at the rear of the car body like the Kfz. 1 & 3. Note the Zwillingslafette 36 for two MG 34. The illustrated vehicle belonged to Panzer Abteilung 300 (FL).

The units which were allowed to have Kfz 4’s had only one vehicle, each. A light tripod 34 was stored at the rear. With the tripod, one MG 34 could be used outside of the vehicle. The Kfz. 4 was officially introduced with the A.H.M. 1938, Blatt 5 from 7th March 1938, No. 132.

In some sources it is claimed, that it could only be fired to the front. This is not true. The photo proves that it could be fired to all directions. Probably, the mount was tied down facing forward during drive to prevent uncontrolled swinging to the left and right. The practical effect of this weapon during combat was questionable.

The Zwillingslafette 36 could be swivelled around 360° which is made clear also by this photo. In this case, the vehicle is actually a Kfz. 1 which was converted to a Kfz. 4. This is proven by the missing ammunition boxes above the rear mudguards.
