Altogether 2,652 exemplars of the sporty 500 ccm motorcycle BMW R 5 were made from 1936 to 1937.
Much experience was needed to drive an R 5. This was necessary because the ignition had to be tuned manually dependent on the engine speed and the affliction. Heavy damage on the engine could be the result of incorrect operation.
