The Panhard 178 was officially designated as AMD Panhard model 1935. After the campaign in the west, about 190 vehicles were taken over by the Wehrmacht as Panzerspähwagen P 204 (f). Among others, the 20. Panzer Division was equipped with such vehicles.

In the last weeks of the French campaign, some Panhard 178 without turret were used by the French war party. Due to the situation of war, no turrets could be delivered for these vehicles. The illustrated vehicle is such a Panhard 178 without turret which was later upgraded by the Wehrmacht with a German machine gun.

Many Panhard 178 were equipped with German roof antennas and radios sets like this Panhard 178 of Panzer-Aufklärungs-Abteilung 37 of the 7. Panzer Division which was – like the 20. Panzer Division – fully equipped with this type.

Some Panhard 178 were converted to rail-able vehicles. They were assigned to several armoured trains. The pneumatic tyres were transported with the armoured train. Such vehicles were used for reconnaissance missions. (Photo: German federal archive via Wikimedia Commons; License: Creative Commons BY-SA-3.0-gb)
