The story of Mathis started with a car workshop which was operated by Émile Ernest Charles Mathis around the turn of the century. First business connections with De Dietrich in the year 1901 led to cooperation with a former employee of this company in 1904, a certain Ettore Bugatti. This connection led to the development and production of a car but in 1906 this connection was ended. Mathis reached certain popularity in the German Reich until the outbreak of World War I – Strassbourg was a German town at this time. During World War I, mainly ambulances and lorries were made. After World War I, passenger cars propelled by four-, six- and eight-cylinder engines were made besides lorries. After economic difficulties at the beginning of the 1930s, Mathis went into cooperation with Ford in 1934. Thereof the brand name Matford arose. At first, Mathis vehicles were offered under the brand name Matford. Later, Ford models were offered. Before and during World War II, lorries were manufactured for the French army and later also for the Wehrmacht. The brand name Matford disappeared before the end of World War II.
