Berliet was a French vehicle manufacturer, admitted for its lorries of high quality. In 1899, the company was founded by Marius Berliet in Brotteaux near Lyon as a small workshop, in which passenger cars were manufactured. The company expanded fast. In 1910, it already had seven branches. In World War I, Berliet saw its chances in the armaments industry, so production was changed over to production of lorries. After a bankrupt in the year 1921, a reconstruction of the company followed. The production of passenger cars ended in 1939. Afterwards, Berliet exclusively manufactured lorries. During World War II, Berliet supplied the French army in large numbers. Many Berliet lorries of the French army and also civil vehicles were taken over by the Wehrmacht. The production was kept up in small numbers during occupation time. Among others, about 862 4.5t lorries were manufactured in 1943 and 400 in 1944.
