The fourgon modèle 1887 was intorduced into the French Army toward the end of the 19th century. With smaller modifications, it was used until World War II. In 1940, nearly 20,000 exemplars of this wagon were still in service. A large part of these wagons was captured by the German Wehrmacht. In 1941, it was introduced by the Wehrmacht under the designation schweren Feldwagen M. 87 (f). Several Infanterie-Divisionen were equipped with this type.
