The French manufacturer Alexandre Darracq founded a branch factory in Milan in 1906. In 1909, the involved local tradesman acquired the majority of stock and started the development of own automobiles. On 24th June 1910, the company was renamed into Società Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, in short A.L.F.A.. The brandname Alfa was borne. During World War I, armaments were manufactured. Commencing in 1919, production was shifted back to civilian products. In the year 1920, the company was renamed into Alfa Romeo after it was taken over by Nicola Romeo. Caused by financial difficulties, he had to abandone the company already in 1928. In 1933, the company was nationalised and renamed into S.A. Alfa Romeo. In the following time, lorries, omnibuses and aircraft engines were manufactured besides automobiles.
