Rudge-Whiteworth-Cycles

Dan Rudge founded a company for the manufacturing of bycycles in Wolferhampton in 1869. In the year 1894, the company merged with the Birmingham based company Whiteworth. The new site was located in Coventry. The first motorcycles were developed in 1910. In 1911, they were first offered. After successful years in the 1920s, the company was near to bankrupt in 1933. Late in 1935, Rudge-Whiteworth was taken over by EMI. In 1937, the production of motorcycles was shiftet to the EMI base in Hayes but was finally stopped in 1939. Starting in 1939, the Coventry works were used for the production of Radar equipment. A bombing raid in 1940 finally stopped production.
