The history of Rover goes back to the Coventry based company J.K. Starley & Sutton Co., which produced cycles starting in 1884. In 1896 was renamed into the Rover Cycle Company. Commencing in 1902, also motorcycles were manufactured. The first automobile followed in the year 1904. From 1906 onwards the company operated under the name The Rover Company Limited. The production of cycles and motorcycles was stopped in the year 1923 and the company was renamed into Rover. Due to the situation of war, the production of passenger cars was stopped in 1940.
