Because the import of lorries was not worthwhile any more due to the world economic crisis, Bedford was founded as a commercial motor vehicle manufacturer in 1930. Bedford mainly manufactured delivery vans, light lorries and buses, which had a very large spreading in Great Britain and Ireland. Fire-fighting vehicles and ambulances were modified based on the different lorry models, too. The first Bedford’s were copies of successful American Chevrolet lorries. Besides that, Bedford produced a whole series of lorries for the British army. Captured exemplars of these reliable vehicles were used by the Wehrmacht, too.
