Sadly only partly visible, this Sd. Kfz. 251 Ausf. B with s. WG 40 had an interesting modification. To increase firepower, a 3.7 cm Pak was mounted on the vehicle. The armour shield of the MG was fitted to the rear of the vehicle in place of the anti aircraft gantry mount.

The first exemplars of the schweres Wurfgerät 40 – a heavy rocket launcher system – were delivered in March 1941. At the beginning of production, mainly older vehicles of the A and B models were retrofitted. Spin stabilised rockets with 28 cm (high explosive) or 32 cm (incendiary) diameter could be fired. The additional width indicator rods were used by the driver to aim at the target. This Sd. Kfz. 251 Ausf. C with s. WG 40 of 7. Panzer Division was photographed during the occupation of southern France late in 1942. (Photo: German federal archive via Wikimedia Commons; License: Creative Commons BY-SA-3.0-gb)

The rockets had a maximum range of 1,925 meters (28 cm high explosive) resp. 2,200 meters (32 cm incendiary). Beginning in 1943, 30 cm high explosive rockets with a maximum range of 4,550 meters could also be used. All six rockets could be fired in ten seconds. Reloading took about four to five minutes.
