The Schweinfurter Präzisions-Kugellager-Werke Fichtel & Sachs were founded in August 1895. Mainly, ball bearings, roller bearings and bicycle wheel-hubs were manufactured. During World War I, armaments were made. Bevore the Great Depression started, the roller bearing branch was sold. The company relied on the development of clutches, shock absorbers and low-power engines. Many German military vehicles in the 1930s and 1940s had components of Fichtel & Sachs. The bicycle auxiliary engine Saxonette, which was built in by several manufacturers, gained some prominence in the late 1930s.
