Although orders for the production of the kleiner Panzerfunkwagen (Sd. Kfz. 260 & 261) were placed in 1937, only two trial vehicles based on the Ausf. A were available in September 1940. Serial production of the kleiner Panzerfunkwagen (Sd. Kfz. 260 & 261) - small armoured radio cars - started first in April 1941 and was dropped in April 1943. The Sd. Kfz. 260 had only a rod antenna. The photo of this Ausf. B was made in Wisoki in June 1943.

Contrary to the Sd. Kfz. 260 the Sd. Kfz. 261 had a foldable roof antenna. Typical feature of the Sd. Kfz. 260/261 series was a wire mesh cover over the open crew compartment which opened to the middle of the vehicle.

This kleiner Panzerfunkwagen (Sd. Kfz. 261) Ausf. A belonged to 2. Panzer Division. Note the widely closed roof of the vehicle. The foldable roof antenna and the wire mesh cover is clearly visible. Theses vehicles had a crew of four men but had no main armament.
