leichter Panzerspähwagen (Fu) (Sd. Kfz. 223) Ausf. A & B

The second variant, which entered serial production in 1935, was the leichter Panzerspähwagen (Fu) (Sd. Kfz. 223) - a light armoured radio car. Production ended in February 1944. Like the Sd. Kfz. 221, the Sd. Kfz. 223 was armed with only one MG 34 in a small turret. The illustrated vehicle is a vehicle of the first series.

There were no Sd. Kfz. 223 based on chassis of the second series. The vehicle in the photo is based on a third series chassis. The vision ports of the older type were still standard. The turn signals on the sides of the superstructure had received a frame for protection.

The Sd. Kfz. 223 of the fourth series had only one Einheitssehklappe in the front of the driver’s plate. Beginning with the fifth series, a broad and a narrow Einheitssehklappe were arranged there. Smaller, round armoured guards for the wheel hubs were introduced.

Note the elevated roof antenna on this vehicle. If not needed, it could be folded down. The illustrated Sd. Kfz. 223 Ausf. B belonged to Pz.A.A. 14 of 14. Panzer Division and was photographed in Kischinev early in 1944.
