In total 220 Exemplars of the Tatra 81 were manufactured from 1939 to 1942. It had a payload of 6.5 tons and was propelled by a 150 HP, 12.5 litres V8 diesel engine. It was used by the Wehrmacht only in small numbers.
The major part of the total production was equiped with a serial production wood-gas generator and was delivered to the private industry. The cylinder capacity had to be increased to 14.7 litres to hold the power of 150 HP.
