Only little information is available about the s.W.S. as armoured self propelled rocket launcher armed with a 15 cm Panzerwerfer 42. The illustrated vehicle was captured by US forces at the end of the war. In the meantime, a further photo came to light which illustrates such a vehicle in use by a German unit. (Photo: NARA)

There were some improvements made compared to the predecessor model of the self propelled 15 cm Panzerwerfer 42 based on Opel-Blitz 3.6-36 S/SSM chassis – the Sd. Kfz. 4/1. The chassis was not overloaded, the interior was larger and the vehicle could carry more ammunition. The top speed of the s. WS. – which was even slower than the low top speed of the Sd. Kfz. 4/1 based on Opel-Maultier chassis – might have caused problems in service. (Photo: NARA)
