Most probably in 1939 the development works wers started to increase the armour of the Panzerkampfwagen II. This lead to the development of the Pz. Kpfw. II n.A. verst. Vk. 16.01. The vehicle had a frontal armour of 80 mm and 50 mm at the sides. The turrer was still armed with a  2 cm Kw.K. 38 and an M.G. 34. (Image from Wa 5 Sparkommissar, Wünsdorf)

In late 1939 the production of a pilot series of 30 vehicles was permitted. The production of these vehicles delayed from late 1941 to late 1942. The first vehicles saw action as part of the Panzer Abteilung z.b.V. 66 in Russia in summer 1942. In the following time, further vehicles were used by the 13. verstärkten Polizei-Panzer-Kompanie, the Panzer-Kompanie 221 and the Panzer-Sicherungs-Kompanie 350.
