There were two variants of the mittlerer Pionierpanzerwagen (Sd. Kfz. 251/7) – an armoured engineer vehicle. Gruppenwagen 1, 3, 5 and Gruppenwagen 2, 4, 6 (number means the position in a platoon). These variants differed by the armament and the engineer equipment. Serial production started in 1941 based on the C model. Two 8 ton bridge sections were stored on the sides of the vehicle. The illustrated vehicle of the C model belonged to 7. Panzer Division. The photo was made during the occupation of southern France in 1942. The mountings of the bridge sections were often used to create additional stowage places. The style of the tactical markings on this Sd. Kfz. 251/7 D of 20. Panzer Division is interesting. The divisional sign, the unit characterisation and the tactical sign were painted on a black rectangle.
