In the manual D 601+ from 8th November 1935 this design was designated as schwerer geländegängiger gepanzerter Personenkraftwagen - heavy cross-country armoured passenger car - (Kfz. 22).  From 1937 to 1938, about 10 exemplars of the now as schwerer geländegängiger gepanzerter Personenkraftwagen (6 Rad) (Sd. Kfz. 247) mit Fahrgestell des l. gl. Lkw. (o) designated design were made. It was based on the chassis of the Krupp L 2 H 143. The vehicles were used as armoured commanders’ vehicles of the motorised reconnaissance battalions.

A rear view of an Sd. Kfz. 247 (6 Rad). Often the vehicle is designated as Standartenwagen – in English: standard car. This is misleading. During reviews, the commander drove in his car with the standard in front of his unit. Normally this was a Kübelwagen. In the case of the Sd. Kfz. 247, the vehicle of the commander was exceptionally armoured.

This absolutely rare photo of the interior of an Sd. Kfz. 247 (6 Rad) clarifies some details which were unknown until now. Drawings of the interior illustrate two seats in the rear of the vehicle but nothing in the centre. This would not be suitable for a commanders’ vehicle. Actually there was a broad comfortable bench in the centre. The pedestal was used for a scissor telescope. The two additional mountings were used for the standard pole.
